01 1030 Alarms

1030 AlarmsCanvas, acrylic
1.9 x 1.9 meters
2024, Kyiv

From February 24, 2022, to April 3, 2024, there were 1030 air raid alarms in Kyiv — 1030 times the сritical notification with red circle 🔴 appeared on smartphone screens — 1030 times the state of alarm arrived.

The first alarms were something terrifying, unusual, unknown. Then the attitude towards them constantly oscillated between "you lie down and pray" and "you tune off your smartphone and you tune out."

Some alarms seemed to have barely noticeable impact on us. Some alarms seemed to have a sharp and deep impact on us. But they did have an impact. All of them did.

Alarm overlays alarm. One on top of another, one on top of another, one on top of another.

Imprint. Imprint. Imprint. Imprint.

Until it completely fills us. We all consist of alarms. Not just those of us who lived or live during the war. But everyone. It's just that during the war, the process of filling with alarm is accelerated, more intense.

What would these 1030 alarms look like if they could be visualized?

I take a canvas 2x2 meters. I take a sponge 1.5 meters in diameter. I take a lot of paint. I make an imprint. Another one. Another one. Another one. I do this 1030 times.
